California’s Title 24 creates mandatory standards for roofs on commercial buildings.
Title 24 Codes states:
Any roofing product with an initial thermal emittance equal to or greater than 75 percent shall have a minimum initial solar reflectance of 70 percent (when tested in accordance to CRRC).
Any roofing product with a minimum initial thermal emittance (E) less than 75 percent... shall have a minimum initial solar reflectance of 70+34* (0.75-E) (when tested in accordance to CRRC). In plain English, roofs that have a high ability to radiate and/or reflect the sun’s rays will stay cooler than their less radiating/reflecting rivals. White roofs have very high solar reflectance and high emittance; conversely, dark roofs can reach temperatures of 180 degrees on a sunny day.
